Play-based Programme Assessment Tool (PPAT)
An assessment tool developed in collaboration with Children on the Edge and University of Chichester (UK) to help organisations identify strengths and gaps in their Early Childhood Education provision and ultimately improve delivery - in the way that children learn best, through play.
The Play-based Programme Assessment Tool is a monitoring and evaluation tool to assess the effectiveness of play-based early childhood education programmes. The framework consists of a direct child assessment conducted in a group setting and an observational environmental assessment tool.
Key activities
Training - facilitators receive training on how to run play-based assessment activities and assessors receive training on how to evaluate children during the assessment
Delivery - facilitators conduct the activities in groups of four children to stimulate a learning environment while assessors score
Data processing - data is added into the provided database which processes and analyses the data automatically to provide results
Key outcomes
Clear score of the programme performance in six key developmental areas including gross motor skills, fine motor skills, cognitive development, social & emotional learning, language & literacy and creativity & imagination
Programme scores from the environmental evaluation including areas of child safeguarding, health & safety, resources, use of purposeful play, quality of interaction and relationships, inclusive play, family engagement and behaviours
Programme performance for global learning outcomes in the early years
Why PPAT?
 1.
Child centred assessments facilitated by the children’s usual educators as opposed to people that children are unfamiliar with
 2.
Activities designed for low-resource, play-based, African early learning settings
 3.
Assessments conducted with groups of children in their authentic play-based environments as opposed to isolating children one-on-one
